N. Sadat Shami is a PhD student in Information Science majoring in Human Computer Interaction with a minor in Cognitive Studies. He is involved with the Human Computer Interaction and Computer Mediated Communication groups at Cornell. His advisor is Joe Walther.
Broadly, his research interests lie within the fields of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) and human computer interaction (HCI). Specifically, he is interested in the social dynamics of distributed work teams and the design of technological tools needed to support such teams.
Sadat has conducted both experiments and field studies of distributed work teams. Most recently he was a researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies, IBM Toronto Software Lab, where he studied distributed software development teams. Previously, he was a Research Associate at the Collaboratory for Research on Electronic Work (CREW) working with Professors Nathan Bos, Judy Olson, and Gary Olson. At CREW, he developed two versions of an organizational simulation called 'Shape Factory'. He also developed a simulation for the University of Michigan Business School called 'Island Telecom' to expose business students to ethical dilemmas in international business. The simulation has been successfully utilized in BBA, MBA and Executive MBA classes.
